Retrospective postcards

Scatter them around the room and instruct team members to pick the postcard that best represents their view of the last iteration. Session plan: The postcards were part of the Information Gathering phase: Pick the postcard that best resembles how you see the team right now.

Hand out blank postcards. Each team member silently writes a postcard to another team member, thanking them for something they did. They can write as many postcards as they like, and they can address them either to individuals or to multiple people.

In an earlier post, I wrote about how teams can focus on the positive by devoting an entire retrospective to playing the “Appreciation Game. Borrowing from another retrospective technique. During one of the retrospectives, I asked the team to write a postcard to one of our ex-team members.

There are many great retrospective ideas out in the Agile community, including variations and additions on the basic questions and creative facilitation techniques. ScrumMasters should develop a toolkit of retrospective techniques that they can use and adapt with their teams. The Postcards (from the edge) exercise is a great mechanism for doing this, to give closure to individuals involved on a project.
